Whichever you choose, be consistent. Mixing time-and-materials and flat-rate on the same invoice confuses customers and invites scrutiny.

The plumbers who get paid fastest are not the ones with the most aggressive collection policies. They are the ones who make payment effortless. That means accepting credit cards on site, including a tap-to-pay link in the invoice email, and never letting the invoice sit overnight before sending it.

For residential service work, payment is due on completion — full stop. Send the invoice before you leave the driveway, while the customer is happy the leak is fixed. For commercial work, Net 15 is reasonable; Net 30 is the limit. Anything longer than 30 days is a financing arrangement, not a payment term, and you should price for it.

Customers do not consciously calculate this — they just feel it.
